Colours’ book-thickness estimator

The estimator was originally posted on our web-site in 2003, and has been used regularly by our staff, as well as many colleagues (and competitors, no doubt) in the last two decades. It is still regularly updated, as new stocks become available, and older ones are discontinued.

A few words of warning about using this “estimator”:

  • Calculations based on house stocks are the most accurate, as we regularly measure and update the thickness of these paper stocks.
  • Calculations based on generic stocks use average density values reported worldwide, and may not be correct for a specific paper or board.
  • Colours does not warrant the accuracy of the information provided. We recommend that you use this “estimator” as a guide only. The most accurate method to determine the thickness of a book is to construct a dummy or mockup and actually measure its thickness with calipers or a ruler. Please contact us if in doubt – we are more than happy to manufacture a dummy book specific to your requirements.
